Substantive Editing

Developmental editing is evaluating the master plan, but substantive editing gets it done. I just do it differently! 

Do you or don't you want to do the heavy lifting yourself? That is the question. If the answer is yes, then you want a developmental edit to see all the potential your manuscript has to offer if you are coachable and willing to put in the work. If the answer is no, then you want a substantive edit, so your manuscript is polished when you get it back, without having to do the bulk of the lifting (which 90% of my clients prefer).

Substantive editing includes:

• Bridging together ideas and filling in missing components, specific to your story, in your own voice.
• Comments, suggestions, and examples within the margins and the body of your work.
• A moderate line edit (via electronically tracked changes) to revise or remove inconsistent and repetitive phrasing, inappropriate verb tense, and/or incorrect word choices, subject-verb agreement, and transitional phrases. Also addresses writing style, tone, narrative flow, consistency and clarity, plus setting, pace, dialogue, and characterization (fiction).
• A virtual coaching call to discuss changes to consider. 
• Ongoing e-mail correspondence and support.
• A revision of your author bio and back cover synopsis.
